Tooting has been inhabited since before the Saxon. The name is of Anglo-Saxon, but the meaning is in dispute. This could mean that the population Tota Tota could have been a local chief Anglo-Saxon. Alternatively, it could be derived from an old verb meaning to show off, to look outward. It may have been a watchtower here in London Road, so that people in the observation post.

The Romans built a road, which was later named by the British Stane Street, London (Londinium) to Chichester (Noviomagus Regnorum) which passed through Tooting. Tooting High Street is built on this road. In Saxon times, Tooting and Streatham (then toting-cum-Stretham) were given to the abbey of Chertsey.
