Some interesting facts about Redhill

Redhill is situated just south of a gap in the North Downs, which is why the railway line London-Brighton through the region.

The city became, when a road was built in 1818. The settlement was originally known as the city of Warwick and became known as Redhill when the post office moved from Red Hill Common in 1856.

An important factor in the development of the city was becoming a railroad. Redhill railway station is still an important node. Redhill is also one of the few places in England, where the Fuller's earth can be removed with dynamite, Alfred Nobel showed for the first time in Redhill quarry in 1867.

A large Victorian psychiatric hospital south of Redhill, Earls Wood Royal Hospital, the house was 40 years at two of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother's cousin Katherine Bowes-Lyon and Nerissa Bowes-Lyon, both of whom had learning difficulties . Prisoners James Henry Pullen (1835-1916) was a scholar with autism. He was a brilliant craftsman and an artist. His work has been approved by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Some models ship Pullen, design and art can be seen on permanent display in City Centre Shopping Belfry. The hospital site has been converted into apartments.

Richard Carrington, an astronomer, moved to Redhill in 1852 and built a house and observatory. Dome Way, Redhill, where the tower house stands alone, takes its name from it. The site is isolated from the observatory, which is a spur of land, surrounded by low fields and Marsh (now in Redhill). Here in 1859, he made astronomical observations, that the first confirmed the existence of solar flares and their influence on the Earth and Northern Electric.
