Some interesting facts about Caterham

The city is in the same Anglo-Saxon administrative division of Tandridge hundred.

The original settlement was a ridge above the modern town and is now called the Caterham on the hill. modern city in the valley is a product of Victorian and become a Caterham track in 1856. Victorian expansion of the city to build the much larger parish church (St. Mary the Virgin) in 1866, but the old Norman church of San Lorenzo will remain and will be directly across the road from St Mary's. As he grew Caterham Valley gained its own church, St. John the Evangelist, which was inaugurated in 1882. It 's still higher than that of Santa Maria.

Since 1877 Caterham barracks on the hill was a deposit for the Regiments of Foot Guards. In August 1975 a house together (arms Caterham), which was frequented by soldiers was attacked by an IRA bomb. The barracks were closed in the 1990's and rebuilt the site for housing.

Caterham is the scene of the police killed only in the history of Surrey Police. On July 6, 1974 PC John Schofield, PS and Ray Fullalove Harley Findlay was a routine patrol when they Caterham became suspicious of a man walking with a large bag. They took his team to their patrol and began to question him. Since the PC Fullalove started coming out of the car Egon von B├╝low produced a gun and shot him in the stomach before shooting dead PC Schofield. PS Findlay was also shot, but saved his notebook from his pocket, which deflected the bullet of his hand. Von Bulow fled but was arrested later the funeral PC Schofield, who was held in the church of St. Mary's, Caterham, six days later. March 1975 von Bulow was sentenced to life imprisonment for murder. PS Findlay then received smth courageous behavior of the queen.

The North Downs Way, a popular National Trail for walkers pass very near the city.

Church Walk Shopping Centre is a small shopping center located opposite the railway station Caterham Caterham Valley. Church Walk has been built where the Hotel Valley, which was demolished in 1988. Long before the Hotel Valley was built (for visitors arriving on trains railway again) used as a tennis court, croquet lawn, garden of roses, fountains, and Mr. Wool tongue.

The creators of the Caterham Seven sports car has a distributor based in Station Avenue, even though the cars were actually delivered from a factory in Dartford as the company expanded. Caterham was built when they were built in a small factory behind a petrol station in Townend in Caterham-on-the-Hill. In 2007, Caterham Cars has celebrated its 50th anniversary. Caterham Cars is known as much racing as they are for street use.

Caterham is the terminus of the modern construction of 1856-Line Caterham Purley. Now you can take a train to London stations: London Victoria and London Bridge Station. You can also go to the Charing Cross on Sunday.

Sports team based in Caterham include youth soccer Queens Park FC and the Old Caterhamians Rugby Football Club was established in 1928. Caterham Cricket Club has previously played in the Queen's Park and now share facilities with the rugby club. Caterham Sea Cadets, which was formed in 1942, also participate in a range of water activities.

Caterham School is a private day and co-educational boarding school for pupils aged 3 -18 years in the outskirts of Caterham. Angus Deayton and Surrey Cricket Ali Brown and James Benning attended school.
