A small area on the southern edge of the London Borough of Brent, Kensal Green borders the boroughs of Westminster to the East, and The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea to the South. Surrounding neighbourhoods include Willesden Green to the north, Harlesden to the West, Brondesbury and Queens Park to the East and Ladbroke Grove to the south.

The names of Kensal Green and Kensal Rise are used somewhat interchangeably to describe non-residents in the same neighborhood, although residents in different areas based on proximity to local tube and train stations. Very roughly speaking, the west side of Chamberlain Layne Road, north and south of Harrow Road Kensal Rise Kensal Green station is considered, while in the east of Chamberlain Road and north of the station Layne considering Kensal Rise. In the late 1960s, parts of the region have acquired an unenviable reputation as a brief and high-crime neighborhood. It was a reputation that led the author John Preston noting:

"When he moved to Kensal Green, Hugh had assumed it would only be a matter of time before the area came into the world. After all, he was near the fashionable areas of Notting Hill and Ladbroke Grove . But as he discovered there were certain parts of London that remained free from any form of gentrification. Kensal Green was one of them, he seemed to have disappeared from the map of property altogether".

From the mid to late 1980s (90 not 80) there was a revival of fortune in the neighborhood. Due to the explosion in the property market of London and its central location Kensal Green and good transport links, a large number of young professional couples and families with young children, and many artists and media professionals flowed into the region. This change was reflected by the number of furniture stores, gourmet food shops and trendy Gastropub, recently opened the House Layne Road.
