Some interesting facts about Hayling Island, Hampshire

An iron-age shrine in the north of Hayling Island was later developed into a Roman temple in the first century BC and was first recorded in Richard Scott's Topographical and Historical Account of Hayling Island published in 1826. The site was excavated between 1897 and 1907 and again from 1976 to 1978. Remains are no longer visible and are buried beneath cultivated farmland.

Salt production was an industry on the island from the 11th century (the Domesday Book records a saltpan on the island for this purpose) until the late 19th century. At the Northwest corner of the island lies the Hayling Oysterbeds Local Nature Reserve.

The island was the site of an invasion during the military drill Fabius in May 1944, the repetitions of the preparations for D-Day.

The old yew tree in the courtyard of the church of Santa Maria is considered the oldest yew trees in the country, with a circumference of about nine meters. Although estimates vary in age, are more than a thousand almost two thousand years.

In summer 2010, Hayling Island Sailing Club hosted the 2010 World Laser Standard Senior and Junior Championships (27.8.-09.05.). Senior Championship winning Australian Tom Slingsby and Thorbjørn Schierup Dane won the junior competition.

Although primarily residential, Hayling is also holidays, windsurfing and sailing center, the place where surfing was invented. In 1985, British courts recognized technology, Peter Chilvers, who as a child Hayling Island assembled his first board combined with a sail, in 1958. Incorporates all elements of modern windsurfing. The courts have said that innovations were later "just an extension course", and confirmed the defendant's argument is based on the movie. Hayling Golf Club was chosen in the top 100 golf courses in the UK. A traditional links course, although relatively short compared to modern standards, the dominant southwest winds, fast greens, deep bunkers, gorse and the traditional ties are a tough test for all golfers.

A carnival (Funland) located in Beachlands, is open all year, as is the railway Hayling East, which turns the corner Eastoke carnival.

The hotel 5 miles (8.0 km) Hayling Billy Trail is a light rail right of way-old became one of the many trails on the island. The Ordnance Survey Explorer map 120 covers the area and the tourist office offers information leaflets for local interest walks.

Station Theatre hosts a variety of plays performed by amateur dramatic company Hayling Island, films and musical events throughout the year. Hayling Island was also the birthplace and home of actress Stephanie Lawrence, who played in several West End shows of music, it has been for many years of friendship with the inventor Peter Chilvers Windsurfing Hayling also. The island of several churches of different denominations, including three Anglican churches, Northney of St. Peter, the head of St. Mary Gable and more recently built St Andrew South Hayling.

Northwode Chapel built by the monks Jumièges in Normandy, began around 1140 and this became the present Church of St. Peter is now the oldest church in the island survived. It 'been said that Peter's three bells, cast in about 1350, is one of the oldest bells in England. Tomb of Princess Youriesvsky (1890-1959), who was a member of the ill-fated Russian royal family, who lived many years in North Hayling, can be found in the cemetery.

Church St. Mary is a standard design of churches of the time, but a careful examination of the walls were built with mortars and local pebble beach. Property Cemetery yew, which is believed to be more than 800 years. Tomb of Scotland George Sandeman, the founder of Porto Sandeman is an important north-eastern part of the cemetery.
