Some interesting facts about Enfield, Middlesex

The London Borough of Enfield (About this sound pronunciation (helpĀ·info)) is the most northerly London borough and forms part of Outer London. It borders the London Boroughs of Barnet, Haringey and Waltham Forest as well as the Hertfordshire districts of Broxbourne and Welwyn Hatfield, and the Essex district of Epping Forest.

Enfield has been recorded in the Domesday Book 1086 as Enefelde, Einefeld 1214, Enfeld 1293, 1564 Enfild is "open country by a man named Eana or when lambs are reared" in Feld Old English Old English name with a personal or Old English EAN 'lame'. Feld was a reference to an open area of trees in the forest after being Enfield Chase.


Enfield Town was a small market town on the edge of the forest north on a day trip to London. As the Greater London has increased, Enfield Town and its environs are a residential suburb, with fast transport links to central London.

The present city was formed in 1965 in the former area municipality of Southgate, the borough of Enfield and Edmonton Municipal County. The arms of these three towns also joined.
