Some interesting facts about Southend

Originally the south end of the village of Prittlewell, Southend became a seaside resort in the Georgian era. Close to London and access by train meant the economy was based on tourism ever since. Southend Pier is the longest pier in the world the pleasure of 1.34 miles (2158m). The company has suffered fires and ship collisions, most recently in October 2005, but the basic structure of the pier has been repaired each time. There was a considerable loss of facilities in the main pier major fire in 1976.

With the decline of spas, from the 1960 Much of downtown was developed for trade and most of the original features were destroyed through neglect recovery. HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) (formerly HM Customs and Excise), are major employers, and central services of VAT revenues are there. Southend opened the University of Essex, Southend to stimulate the economy.

There are nine railway stations within the township two routes connecting in London.

Southend-on-Sea was born in the municipal township in 1892 and serves as the share of local government in Essex County. In 1913, the enlargement of the former township of Leigh on Sea urban district. In 1914 Southend had an enlarged area for the district in the county, exempted from the control of the county council and a single tier of local government. The county borough was expanded in 1933, the area ex Shoeburyness Urban District and part of the Rural Rochford.

Cliff Gardens, which included the Never Never Land, and Victoria was the attraction on stage in 2003, until the movement of parts of the unstable cliffs, and the stage was removed. The Council intends to re-construct the stage, but the location is found.

A warehouse with modern machinery links at the bottom of High Street to the promenade and the new pier entrance. Southend Cliff Railway most, a short cable car is a few hundred meters.

The second and fourth Saturdays monthly, Southend hosted the farmers market.

Since 1986, the first exhibition with an asterisk Concorde, makes routine, while the transport of passengers, screening, called the Air Festival in 2009, is held every May. The show - one of Europe's largest free-flight demonstrations - the fastest military jets and air sports acrobatic shows to fly along the promenade. RAF Falcons parachute display team and the RAF's Red Arrows jet aerobatic team has regular visitors to display.

Every August Southend Carnival opens on the "Golden Mile", where the Southend Illuminations lighting.

There are three theaters. The Cliffs Pavilion is a great home building concerts and performances on ice. The most recent was the scene of the New Empire Theatre. Is, unlike the two private properties. It is used by most amateur groups. The theater has become the ABC movie, which was originally a theater built in 1896. New Empire Theatre closed in 2009. The Palace Theatre is a Class II Edwardian building, built in 1912. Shows playing professional companies and groups of contacts, and comedies. The theater has two circles and the steepest in Britain. Part of the theater was a small room called the Dixon Studio.
