Some interesting facts about Rochester

Romano-British name was Durobrivae Rochester. This is commonly translated as "the bastion of the bridge", or "fortress of the bridges". This could have been Bélgica Liquidation or oppidum, but there was no bridge 43 AD and was also known as Durobrovum Durobrivis, which might be of Latinate English word "Dourbruf": a rapid flow.

It recorded in c.730, and Durobrivis Dorobrevis to 844 and pronounced "Robrivis". Bede copied down the name, the C730, the thought of its significance as a fortified camp of Hrofi (OE Hrofes cæster). So we Hrofæscæstre C730, 811 Hrofescester, 1086 Rovescester, 1610 in Rochester.

As the name of the city of Rochester contains the Latin word "castration", which is present in the names of several cities that were once Roman camps ("Deva", Chester, for example, in Latin), which was supposed to a Roman fortress town of Rochester, but found no evidence that high. The pattern of the street in Rome suggests that it was a line of shops and houses built along a road, and the systematic enhancement did not occur until after the year 175.

The Latinized adjective "Roffensis" refers to Rochester.

Rochester has for centuries been a strategic importance due to its position near the confluence of the River Thames and Medway. Its castle was built to guard the river crossing, and the Chatham dockyard was the real key to the long period of supremacy of the Royal Navy. The city, as part of Medway, is surrounded by two circles of the strengths, the inner line of forts built during the Napoleonic Wars are: Fort Clarence Fort Pitt Fort Amherst and Fort Gillingham. Line out of "Palmerston" fortress was built during the 1860s in light of the report of the Royal Commission on the UK defense, when dealing Fort Borstal, Fort Bridgewood, Fort Luton, and two pockets Twydall strong on the islands of Medway, and Fort Hoo Fort Darnet.

During the First World War, during the war, Short Brothers Aircraft Company 'made the first airplane to launch a torpedo, short type Admiralty 184, and the Second World War, during the war, made the first four-engine bomber, Stirling, and boats bats of the water level of the factory not far from the River Medway at Rochester Castle.

Naval power and the decline of shipbuilding in general, has led the government to abandon its site in Chatham in 1984, and then the death of most of the marine industry. Rochester and its surrounding communities were hit hard by this, and I experienced the painful adjustment post-industrial economy, a lot of social exclusion and unemployment. The closure of Chatham Dockyard area has seen an unprecedented increase in the unemployment rate of 15.9%. This fell to 3.5% in 2004.

Rochester and its neighbors, Chatham and Gillingham, form a single large urban area known as the Medway towns with a population of about 250,000, however, Rochester has always ruled in March in the second half of the Medway in Strood. This is known as the Strood Intra, before 1835 was about 100 feet wide and stretched Gun Alley. In 1835 the government extended the limits of the law to cover more Frindsbury and Strood, and part of Chatham known as the Chatham Intra. In 1974, the Rochester City Council was disbanded and replaced by Medway Borough Council, which is also the parishes Cuxton, Halling and Cliffe, and the Hoo Peninsula. In 1979, the township has become a Rochester-upon-Medway. Mayor of Rochester was also the Admiral Medway and this dignity was transferred to the Mayor of Medway as a single authority that has been created along the river to the Admiralty Court, which is a committee formed by the Council.

Like many medieval towns in England Rochester city free men, whose citizenship rights have been abolished by the Municipal Corporations Act 1835. However, the guild of fishermen and the work continued without Dredgers and still has the rights, duties and responsibilities in the Medway, between sheep and stone Hawkwood. This authority makes its presence in the Admiralty Court the jury of freemen, responsible for river conservation legislation. Freedom is spent on learning to say "bonded" to a man free to work. Catches of the annual ceremony of the terminals on the River takes place after the Court, usually the first Saturday in July.

City of Rochester by the state in 1211, but due to an administrative error had been soaked in Rochester Medway unified authority of the state of the lost city.
