Some interesting facts about Maidenhead

Name of Maidenhead, strictly speaking, refers to a busy area of the river, where the 'New wharf' or has been built 'Maiden Hythe', perhaps in Saxon times. It has been suggested that the nearby Great Hill Taplow was called the 'Mai Dun' by the Iron Age Britons. The area in the center of the city, was originally called "South Ellington" and recorded in the Domesday Book 100 Beynhurst Ellington.

In 1280 a bridge was built over the river to replace a ferry in what was then the tiny village south of Ellington. The Great West Road, Reading, Bristol and Gloucester were diverted to the new bridge - formerly kept on the north side crossed the Thames at ford on Cookham - Maidenhead medieval and grew up around it. In recent years a wharf was built next to the bridge and south of the name of Duke Ellington had fallen with the area became known as Maidenhythe (which literally means "new wharf"). The first mention of the name change is in Bray Court rolls of manor landscape 1296th Bridge led to a growth in Maidenhead: a stop for buses to travel between London and Bath and High Street became populated with inns. Location at the edge of Maidenhead has attracted many celebrities, including personality and former Australian Rolf Harris TV Michael Parkinson. The Spice Girls shared a house in the years before Maidenhead rise to stardom.

The city was home to Sir Nicholas Winton, whose heroic efforts saved 669 Jewish children from Czechoslovakia in the race for two World War II. There is a statue of him at the station in Maidenhead.
