Some interesting facts about Hendon NW4

Hendon was historically a civil parish in the county of Middlesex. The manor is described in Domesday (1087), but the name, meaning "Hendun the highest hill", is the earlier. There is even evidence of Roman settlement discovered by the Hendon and District Archaeological Society and others, a urn a child was found beheaded near Sunny Hill Park. The Midland Railway and the Great Northern Railway was built through Hendon in the 1860's. There is no evidence of problems with the wild horses that feed between tracks . The subway, Golders Green arrived in 1907. Much of the developed area on the outskirts of London and the region is now largely built with campaigns in the area of Mill Hill as Copthall playing fields. Hendon big industry has focused mainly on manufacturing, and includes works by motor and aviation, which grew from the 1880's. In 1931 the civil parish of Edgware was abolished and its territory was added to the great civil parish of Hendon.

Hendon became urbanized area in 1894. In 1932, the urban district became the city's municipal Hendon. The municipal borough was abolished in 1965 and was incorporated into the London Borough of Barnet.

Hendon claim to fame is driving and Hendon Aerodrome is now the RAF Museum. The region is closely associated with The aviator Claude Grahame-White. Another part of the Aerodrome site is the Hendon Police College, training center for the Metropolitan Police.

He is a former municipality and former parish. The name means the high place or down, and Hendon motto is Endeavour. Burroughs is the Civic Centre London Borough of Barnet, and also the site of Middlesex University Business School.

Hendon and District Archaeological Society has found a number of interesting objects in the Roman church of late, but nothing conclusive, and the solution of Saxony, near the church can not be a continuation of its Roman predecessor. The Domesday Book mentions a priest and a church building was documented in 1157. The structure of the oldest church is now in the 13 century. 50 m tower (c1450) has been restored in the 18th century when the vane in the shape of the "Lamb and the flag", the insignia of San Juan, was added. Western Church is the Greyhound pub which was rebuilt in 1898. Originally called the House of the Church, was used for meetings in the vestry from 1600 to 1878. In 1676 an inn, named after the Greyhound, was burned in a fire. In 1855, the fire department was established, renamed the Hendon VPK in 1866, and manual fire engine was held in a building near the church. Further west of the church houses a museum which opened in 1955, operated by the London Borough of Barnet.

However, St. Mary's Cemetery is the resting place of a milder spirit, Coventry Patmore's wife, Emily, the model for the poem The Angel in the House (1854), in which the Victorian ideal of domesticity "the Angel of Home" is based.
