Some interesting facts about Hayling Island

Iron Age Sanctuary in the northern part of Hayling Island was later developed into a Roman temple from the first century BC and was recorded by Richard Scott, surveying and historical Hayling Island was published in 1826. The site was excavated between 1897 and 1907 and again 1976-1978. Remains is no longer visible, and are buried in the agricultural land cultivated.

Salt production was an industry of the island since the 11th century (the Domesday Book records a marsh on the island for this purpose) until the late 19.

In the northwest corner of the island is a nature reserve Hayling local oyster.

The island was the site of a mock invasion of Fabius during military training in May 1944, the advanced preparations for D-Day.

The old Yew tree in the courtyard of the Church of St. Mary is considered the oldest yew trees in the country, with a circumference of about nine meters. Although estimates vary as to their age, they go over a thousand to nearly two thousand years.

In the summer of 2010, the Hayling Island Sailing Club host the 2010 World Laser Standard Senior and Junior Championships (August 27, September 5). The championship was won by Australian Tom Slingsby high level, while Dane won the competition Schierup Thorbjoern junior.

Although primarily residential, Hayling is also a holiday, windsurfing and the center, where surfing was invented. In 1985, British courts recognized prior art by Peter Chilvers, who as a young boy on Hayling Island assembled his first board combined with a veil in 1958. It includes all the elements of the modern windsurfer. The courts have held that recent innovations was "just an obvious extension" and upheld the defendant's claim based on sequences of the film. This test has established an important precedent for patent law in the United Kingdom, inventive and not obvious. The case, Chilvers, Hayling and a copy of the original painting of Chilvers appeared in an episode of the BBC's One Show in 2009.

The island also has one of the few Real Tennis active in Britain. Founded in 1911, Seacourt Tennis Club is one of the few in Britain, where it is possible to play every Racquet Sports recognized. The Court was opened by snowshoe Sir Colin Cowdrey.

Hayling Golf Club was voted the top 100 golf courses in England. A traditional links course, although relatively short compared to modern standards, the strong prevailing winds from the southwest, fast greens, deep bunkers, gorse and traditional ties are a severe test for all golfers.

An amusement park (Funland) is at Beachlands, is open all year, as the railway Hayling Is Light, which runs the amusement park at the corner Eastoke.

5-mile (8.0 km) Hayling Billy Trail is a former light-rail right of way, that was one of the many trails of the island. The National Land Survey Explorer map 120 covers the area and the local tourist information office provides local walks leaflets.

Station Theatre hosts a variety of plays performed by amateur dramatic company Hayling Island, films and musical events throughout the year. Hayling Island was also the birthplace and home of actress Stephanie Lawrence, who played in several West End shows of music, it has been for many years of friendship with the inventor Peter Chilvers Windsurfing Hayling also. The island of several churches of different denominations, including three Anglican churches, Northney of St. Peter, the head of St. Mary Gable and more recently built St Andrew South Hayling.

Northwode Chapel built by the monks Jumi├Ęges in Normandy, began around 1140 and this became the present Church of St. Peter is now the oldest church in the island survived. It 'been said that Peter's three bells, cast in about 1350, is one of the oldest bells in England. Tomb of Princess Youriesvsky (1890-1959), who was a member of the ill-fated Russian royal family, who lived many years in North Hayling, can be found in the cemetery.

Church of Santa Maria is a standard design of the churches of the time, but a closer examination of the walls were built with mortars and local pebble beach. Property Cemetery yew, which is believed to be more than 800 years. Tomb of Scotland George Sandeman, the founder of Porto Sandeman is an important north-eastern part of the cemetery.
