Some interesting facts about Gosport

Until the last quarter century was an important city 20 Gosport naval and military defense-related infrastructure and the provision of Her Majesty's Naval Base (HMNB) Portsmouth. A house of three cells discovered during construction of the Domain Rowne in the 1970s points to a real landscape.

There are several theories about how the city is also the name of a name soon to Goseport which is believed to be the "goose". Alternative etymology "gorse" (Heath shrubs growing on their own country) is not supported by the regional name of the plant, "Furze". A third theory, which was found in the Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales and use the city's motto, "Gate of God Our Haven", said derived from the "Port of God", Stephen King in 1144 thanks to a landing safe in a storm. This, however, is an invention of 19 century. Royal Hospital Haslar, the last official military hospital in the United Kingdom were closed as a military site in March 2007. It 'was inaugurated in 1753, serving soldiers and their families, and later to serve the community in Gosport. The hospital was then used in the NHS until 2009. The hospital closed the National Health Service were transferred to Queen Alexandra Hospital in Cosham, Portsmouth.

The Royal Navy still maintains a presence in Gosport at HMS Sultan (establishment), which is home to the Royal Naval School of Marine Engineering (RNSME) and the Royal Naval Air Engineering and Survival School (RNAESS). The site occupies 179 acres Sultan (0.72 km2) of land within a 3.5 mile (5.6 km) radius and is the largest training institutions in the Royal Navy, with nearly 3000 staff and services civil when working on full capacity.

Next to the River Alver, which crosses the southern and western edges of Rowne can be found a Norman Motte and Bailey, the first fortification of the peninsula, which gives a high vantage point on the Solent, Stokes Bay, Lee-on -the-Solent and Isle of Wight. Real estate and HMS Sultan Rowne is located at the former Royal Naval Air Station, originally known as RAF Gosport and later as HMS Siskin and gives its name to local schools for children and juniors. Barracks Brown Down (Stokes Bay) were used in the first series of Bad Lads Army.

Within the enclosure, there is next to the wall Haslar Solent graves found of Turkish prisoners of war in the tranquil setting overlooking the busy route between the mainland and the Isle of Wight. These tombs have led to the nickname of people Gosport called "Turks" and Gosport as "Turktown".
