Some interesting facts about Gerrards Cross

The name of the village is relatively new compared to other villages that surround it. Gerrards Cross is not in any formal sense until 1859, when it was created by taking pieces of the five parishes of Chalfont St. Peter, Fulmer, Iver, Langley, Upton Marish as the new parish church. Gerrard takes its name from the family, which at the beginning of 17 century manor house owned here. At that time, was the parish of Chalfont St Peter Hamlet. It is located in the Iron Age fort.

The distinctive large parish church dedicated to Saint-Jacques. It was built in 1861 as a monument to General Reid was a member of Windsor and designed by Sir William Tite yellow brick with a dome of Byzantine Campanile, the future of China and the turrets of Italian style. In 1969, singer Lulu married Maurice Gibb of the Bee Gees in the church. Originally called the Cross of Jarrett, before the time of the Gerrard family, after a highwayman and remains there until Jarrett Hill International WEC A40 Jarrett and villas are still in existence. The actress Margaret Rutherford is buried in the cemetery of the Church of San Jaime.

Gerrards Cross has its own well-equipped library, a cinema with two screens and various restaurants.

Independent schools are St. Mary, Thorpe and House Gayhurst. Most students in secondary school age attending a local grammar school, high school such as Dr. Challoner (Boys) High School Dr Challoner (girls), the Royal Grammar School, High Wycombe (children) and Beaconsfield High School (girls). Those who fail the entrance exam to attend Chalfont Community College, which is the catchment school or, more often than not, are sent to leading independent schools.

Just outside of Gerrards Cross on the A40 in Beaconsfield, is one of the largest landfill sites in the UK. The landfill operated by Veolia Landfill Ltd currently has capacity for 900 000 tons of non-hazardous waste each year from south Buckinghamshire, London and other surrounding areas. The site must stop accepting waste and to enter a period of restoration and monitoring in 2013, Veolia announced in 2009 that, due to economic conditions can take longer than expected.
