Some interesting facts about Twyford, Berkshire

Twyford is a large village and civil parish in the English county of Berkshire. It is situated, at grid reference SU794752, in the heart of the Thames Valley on the A4 between Reading and Maidenhead, close to Henley-on-Thames and Wokingham.

The town's name is Anglo-Saxon in origin, and means double ford. It is a common name in England. Twyford does, as the name suggests, have two fords, on the Bath Road to the west of the centre. One is bridged, the other is next to the Land's End Public House.

William Penn, founder of Pennsylvania, has spent the last years of his life in the fields of Ruscombe, near Twyford hotel and remembered a residential street named "Pennfield".

Twyford was essentially a solution based on agriculture until the arrival of the railroad in 1838 was placed on the main line to the west and beyond is out of the union of Henley. However, its position on the road to Bath has always provided an activity that focused on the king's arms, an important coaching inn. The opening of a bypass in 1929 has finally completed the main east-west traffic through the center, but still busy Twyford in a north-south of Wokingham, in the south of the Henley to the north. Further expansion, however, has taken place since the Second World War, especially in the last 50 years with the construction of several properties north and south of the village. The population is now 9,000, but it is affectionately known by locals as a people.

Twyford is now largely a bedroom community for workers to travel to Reading, Maidenhead and London. Local employment and therefore the business is limited by its proximity to major urban areas of Reading and Maidenhead, where the main High Street Shopping is located. It is, however, have a major supermarket and other retail outlets, making the local center for the northern district of Wokingham. The town is considered a prosperous area, where property prices are significantly higher than the national average. Twyford is also one of the lowest levels of unemployment in the country.

Twyford has its own parish council, and in the town of Wokingham, Berkshire and ceremony. Before he was in Wokingham Rural District and the hundreds of Charlton. By 1895, Twyford was part of the parish of Hurst, freedom of Broad Hinton. Between the 13 th century and 1844, Broad Hinton was officially a separate part of Wiltshire.

Situated in the valley of the Thames, Twyford is 10 miles from the M4, M40 and M3 and 25 miles from the M25. Twyford Station is located on the Main Line Great Western and is served by trains between Reading and London Paddington stations. These transportation links are Twyford very popular with commuters. The city of Reading is located 10 km (6 miles) west of 12 km Maidenhead (7.5 miles) east and Henley-on-Thames 8 km (5 miles) north. London is 56 km (35 miles) east.

There are two playing fields in Twyford, two are owned and operated by the Parish Council.

First Field of King George (aka The Rec), situated between London Road and Wargrave road soccer fields, three tennis courts, playgrounds and a youth shelter. A project to build a skate park and playing ball in the field was completed in July 2008.

2nd Stan Meadow Lake, off Waltham Road, has football pitches, a cricket square used by Twyford & Ruscombe Cricket Club, and a pavilion, which is also used as a kindergarten.

Indoor sports use the Parish Hall, Loddon Hall. It is a facility shared with the neighboring parish of Ruscombe.

Twyford is also a youth football club called Twyford Comets, who play on both recreation areas described above.

Twyford is also a gym, bowls club has its green, and claims the country's oldest Badminton Club.
