Some interesting facts about Farnborough, Hampshire

Farnborough is a town in north east Hampshire, England, and part of the district of Rushmoor. Farnborough was founded in Saxon times and is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086. The name is formed from Ferneberga which means "fern hill".

The town is probably best known for its association with aviation - Farnborough Airshow, Farnborough Aerodrome and the Air Accidents Investigation Branch.

Change name: Ferneberga (11 century); Farnburghe, Farenberg (13 century); Farnborowe, Fremborough, Fameborough (16 century).

Tower Hill, Cove: There is considerable evidence that several years ago a large accumulation of SARS stone existed in what became known as "Tower Hill". Even today, more than 1,000 of these stones back, the size of a loaf or two tons in size, spread, reusable for many different purposes, but still short of their probable site of origin.

The city is home to the Abbey of Saint-Michel. The Imperial Crypt is the resting place of Napoleon III (1808-1873), emperor of the French, and his wife, Eugenia de Montijo (1826-1920) and his son, Louis Napoleon, Prince Imperial. The crypt of St. Peter Parish Vieja is also believed to house the remains of several counts of Anglesey. Since 2007, the abbey was home to the National Catholic Library.

River Blackwater in Hampshire / Surrey border was the scene of the fight between the first international award Tom Sayers and John C. Heenan, which took place near where the pub The Ship Inn.

Closely linked to the airfield at Farnborough, located between Farnborough and Fleet, Samuel Franklin Cody. Cody, Cody Col Sam or as it was called, was one of the pioneers of aviation. He died when he crashed his plane on the ball Hill, a site that is now in the technology park QinetiQ.

Farnborough airfield is the site of the royal establishment historic aircraft (RAE). Sir Frank Whittle conducted much of his research on the jets of RAE. Gloster E.28/39 a replica (based on the prototype) is located on a roundabout route along tively in honor of its inventor.

Napoleon III, his wife Empress Eugenie and her son Louis Napoleon is buried in the crypt of the Abbey of Saint-Michel. Paul Weller, David Mellor, Nigel Farage and Anne Robinson all went to school in Farnborough. Current Middlesex County Cricket Club captain Shaun Udal, who played for New Hampshire and England international, was born and raised here.

Arthur English has lived in Farnborough. Fernand Cabrol, scholar and monk was prior and later abbot of the Benedictine monastery.

In 1922, TE Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia) was assigned to RAF Farnborough for a photography class, it is believed he lived in Farnborough for six weeks.

Farnborough Hampshire is in the north and near the border with Surrey. The Blackwater River is part of the border. It is located 34 miles (55 km) southwest of London and 16 miles (26 kilometers) east of Basingstoke, just south of Exit 4 of the M3 motorway. The city lies at the heart of the town of Blackwater Valley, including Aldershot, Camberley, Yateley, Sandhurst, Frimley and Farnham.

Farnborough has been included in several large villages, as has been expanded to include Cove and Southwood, both of which are now considered in the suburbs. It is a divided and the garrison town of Aldershot in the south and north of Frimley. Based on the City Council Rushmoor is a local government. There are city and the area near Aldershot.

The area is ITV News, ITV Meridian and the local BBC TV news is the southern region of the BBC. Farnborough is the BBC BBC Surrey (covering Surrey & North East Hampshire is 104.6FM). Local commercial radio stations have 96.4 Eagle Radio and Radio Sound County.
